WHY OBAMA? #6
Barack leads the most "meaningful" poll of the election, Iowa
Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mike Huckabee surged into narrow leads in Iowa in a poll released on Sunday, barely a month before the state holds the first contest in a shifting 2008 presidential race.
"Most simply, *national* polls reflect what issues are important to voters but provide little information as to who is winning, the analysts said. Early *state* polls are handier for judging the horse race of candidates..."
"'Pay a lot of attention to those early states, because no matter who's leading nationwide, the person who wins those states ... can change the whole contest.'"
"Timing is key. National polls fade in significance as state primaries begin."
"'In 2000 and 2004, the polls were so incorrect at this point in time as to be completely meaningless.'"
"'The closer to the contest date, the more accurate a poll should be. New Hampshire voters tend to make up their minds at the very last minute.'"
"Obama, campaigning in Iowa, said the shifting polls explained the growing frequency and intensity of attacks on him from Clinton, a New York senator and former first lady."
"'Folks from some of the other campaigns are reading the polls and starting to get stressed, and issuing a whole range of outlandish accusations,' Obama said."
"'All these accusations that are starting to come out seem to correspond to shifting political fortunes.'"
UPDATE, 7 Dec:
"Among those most likely to attend the caucuses, Obama has moved substantially ahead of Clinton, 35 percent to 29 percent."
"Obama also gets more support from those who say they will "probably" attend a Democratic caucus (40 percent vs. 27 percent for Clinton).
"Obama is much more likely than Clinton to be viewed as the candidate best able to bring about change (42 percent vs. 28 percent for Clinton) and as more personally likable (41 percent vs. 18 percent)."
